The Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on political leaders at all levels to remain faithful to the promises that brought them into office and to prioritize effective service delivery for the people who elected them.
Speaking at the Buganda Kingdom headquarters in Bulange, Mengo on Wednesday, Mayiga emphasized that leaders must not deviate from their original mission once entrusted with power, urging them to focus on key sectors including health, the economy, and education.
He warned that many politicians tend to shift their positions after elections, denying citizens the benefits of good leadership.
“As leaders, you must not abandon the issues that made people vote for you; focus on solving the real problems affecting citizens,” he said.
Mayiga made the remarks while presiding over the distribution of kits for participants in the upcoming Kabaka Birthday Run, an initiative aimed at fighting HIV/Aids.
The event continues to attract growing participation from leaders, institutions, and members of the public ahead of the run scheduled for Sunday, April 12, 2026, at Lubiri Palace in Mengo.
Among the notable contributors were Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo, Manager of the Office of the National Chairman (ONC), who purchased kits worth Shs15 million; Kira Municipality MP-elect George Musisi, who contributed Shs1 million; and Dr. Ronex Kisembo, an East African Legislative Assembly aspirant, who purchased kits worth Shs2.5 million and received a certificate valued at Shs1 million.
The Presidential Household contributed kits worth Shs10 million.
Several institutions also supported the initiative. Buganda Royal Institute purchased over 400 kits, Muteesa I Royal University acquired more than 300 kits, St Lawrence University bought 100 kits, and Lubiri High School’s main and Buloba campuses collectively purchased 2,680 kits.
People’s Medical Hospital Kasangati contributed Shs1 million, while Ibrahim Star Depot in Wankulukuku purchased kits worth Shs1.5 million.
Several nursery and primary schools, as well as individual participants, also took part.
Mayiga further encouraged students to prioritize their health and avoid behaviors that could expose them to HIV, stressing the importance of responsible living among young people. He urged all Ugandans to treat health as a key priority.
The First Deputy Katikkiro and Minister for Administration and ICT, Prof. Twaha Kaawaase Kigongo, called on the public to take advantage of the remaining time to purchase kits and participate in the run, while emphasizing punctuality on the event day.
Remmie Kisaakye, Managing Director of Majestic Brands, expressed appreciation to partners and supporters for their continued commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo also commended the Kabaka and the Buganda Kingdom for their leadership in promoting public health and pledged continued efforts to mobilize communities in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Participants praised the Kabaka for his dedication to improving health outcomes and extended their congratulations as he marks his 71st birthday.
